Is EPIC: The Musical Made by AI? The Truth Behind the Viral Sagas

If you have spent any time scrolling through TikTok, YouTube, or music streaming platforms over the last few years, chances are you’ve run into a snippet, animatic, or discussion about EPIC: The Musical. With its cinematic orchestral drops, emotional character arcs, and massive online fandom, it’s one of the biggest indie internet phenomena in years.

Because of its modern rise on social media and polished sound, a question often pops up among curious listeners: Is EPIC: The Musical made with artificial intelligence?

The short answer is no. EPIC is entirely a product of human creativity, passion, and years of hard work.

The Human Mind Behind the Music

EPIC: The Musical was created, written, and produced by Jorge Rivera-Herrans. The project originally began back in 2019 as a college senior thesis project when Jorge was studying at the University of Notre Dame. Inspired by video games and anime, he set out to create a musical adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem, The Odyssey, structured into distinct conceptual “sagas” (like the Troy Saga, Cyclops Saga, Underworld Saga, and Ithaca Saga).

Rather than relying on a computer prompt, the project came to life through traditional, intensive human collaboration:

  • Years of Writing: Jorge spent years crafting complex musical motifs, character themes (leitmotifs), and lyrical callbacks that trace Odysseus’s agonizing journey home.
  • Real Vocalists and Musicians: Every single line is sung by a real cast of talented voice actors and singers (such as Teagan Earley, Luke Holt, Armando Julián, and many others).
  • Transparent Creation: Jorge famously documented his songwriting and production process on TikTok, sharing vocal warm-ups, script revisions, and instrumentation choices with millions of followers over several years.

Where Does the AI Confusion Come From?

If the musical is entirely human-made, why do people sometimes associate it with AI? The confusion usually stems from a few external corners of the internet:

  • Fan-Made AI Voice Covers: On platforms like YouTube and TikTok, generative AI voice models are frequently used by fans to create “what-if” covers. People sometimes train AI on the voices of EPIC’s cast members to sing songs from other media—or vice versa—which blurs the lines for casual scrollers.
  • Algorithmic Search Overload: Because the musical features a dramatic, fantasy-orchestral sound, listeners searching for related content on streaming apps or video sites occasionally run into automated “epic music” or generic fantasy channels that utilize AI-generated tracks to capture search traffic.
  • Internet Skepticism: In an era where generative media is everywhere, internet sleuths occasionally jump to conclusions, falsely accusing independent artists, album artists, or animators of using AI tools, forcing creators to share their raw line art and project files to prove their work is authentic.

Why EPIC Resonates

At its core, EPIC: The Musical stands as a massive celebration of human storytelling. The emotional gut-punches of Odysseus’s tough moral choices, the distinct personalities of the Greek gods, and the raw vocal power packed into tracks like “Monster” or “Thunder Bringer” are driven entirely by genuine artistic expression.

While AI might be changing how some people explore digital media, EPIC proves that the deep, emotional connection between a creator, a cast, and an audience is something a algorithm simply can’t replicate.
