Long before he was dubbed the “Son of Netflix” or capturing hearts globally in hit K-dramas like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just an ordinary, highly introverted kid growing up in Suwon, South Korea.
Examining Song Kang’s early life reveals a surprising contrast to the charismatic, towering leading man known on screen today. Far from a natural-born performer craving the spotlight, his childhood was defined by quiet hobbies, athletic roots, and a gradual, unexpected awakening to the world of cinema.
A Household of Athletes and Artists
Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a tight-knit family of four, including his parents and a younger brother born in 1998. Athletics and artistry ran deep in his household. His father was a former artistic gymnast, and the men in his family boasted a strong athletic pedigree (including a grandfather with a background in wrestling).
However, young Song Kang didn’t quite inherit the competitive drive for professional sports. Though he grew up surrounded by physical discipline, he joked that he wasn’t suited for a career as an athlete.
Instead, his mother—a piano teacher—introduced him to the arts early on. During his elementary school years, Song Kang spent hours practicing the keyboard and even won several awards in piano competitions. Though he admitted he practiced somewhat reluctantly at the time, those early lessons inadvertently planted the seeds for his future career, coming full circle years later when he had to master complex musical pieces for roles.
The Introverted Student
Despite his striking height and visuals that would later make him a top-tier model and actor, Song Kang was remarkably shy as a child and teenager.
In interviews, he has often opened up about his school days, confessing that he was so introverted he would intentionally eat lunch in quiet corners just to avoid drawing attention. Even as his career took off, he noted that the residual shyness of his youth lingered, making large crowds and intense scrutiny a hurdle he had to consciously overcome.
When he first told his mother that he wanted to pursue acting, her reaction was classic motherly skepticism: “What kind of acting can someone as introverted as you do? Go learn a skill instead.”
Early Dreams: Architecture and Design
Before acting ever crossed his mind as a viable career, Song Kang had entirely different aspirations. Growing up, he was captivated by structural aesthetics and envisioned a future building spaces. He harbored a strong childhood dream of becoming an architect or a furniture designer, inspired simply by seeing “cool pictures” of buildings and interior layouts.
Ultimately, he shelved the dream—not out of a lack of interest, but because he admitted he had “no idea where he needed to start” to break into the industry.
The Cinematic Spark That Changed Everything
The turning point for the quiet teenager came not from a school play or a local talent show, but from the glowing screen of a television. While watching Leonardo DiCaprio deliver his iconic, emotionally charged performance in Titanic, Song Kang experienced a profound cinematic awakening.
The depth of expression and the raw emotion conveyed by DiCaprio mesmerized the young introvert. For the first time, he felt a magnetic pull toward a craft that allowed people to express such intense inner worlds. That single film planted the ambition that would eventually lead him to Konkuk University’s Department of Film Arts—the very same university attended by BTS member Jin.
Turning Down K-Pop for the Silver Screen
As he transitioned into young adulthood, Song Kang’s physical transformation and undeniable presence caught the attention of the entertainment industry. Before making his official acting debut, he was scouted multiple times by K-pop idol agencies.
Given how common it is for actors to transition from idol training, many expected him to take the path of a pop star. However, Song Kang firmly declined the offers. His heart was entirely set on acting; he wanted to build a career through character immersion, script analysis, and emotional depth rather than music stages.
Looking back, the shy boy from Suwon who used to hide in the corners of the cafeteria took a long, winding road to stardom. From reluctant piano player and aspiring architect to a cinematic daydreamer inspired by Hollywood classics, Song Kang’s childhood shaped the introspective, deeply empathetic actor known and loved today.
