Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS Officer? Unraveling the Truth Behind the Legend

When millions of Indian youth dream of cracking the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination—widely considered one of the toughest competitive exams in the world—few names resonate as deeply as Dr. Vikas Divyakirti.

Known for his eloquent lectures, deep philosophical insights, and immense popularity on digital platforms, he is a household name for civil service aspirants. However, a common question often sparks debate among new aspirants and curious onlookers: Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?

The short answer is no, he is not currently an IAS officer. However, the story behind why people associate him with the title—and his actual, fascinating history with the civil services—is far more nuanced than a simple “yes” or “no.”

The Turning Point: He Did Clear the UPSC Exam

To understand the confusion, one must look back at Dr. Divyakirti’s academic and professional journey.

Born in Bhiwani, Haryana, Vikas Divyakirti pursued an extensive and rigorous education, earning multiple degrees—including a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and a Ph.D. in Hindi Literature from Delhi University, alongside qualifications in other disciplines.

In 1996, at a young age, he appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Examination for the very first time. He cleared the exam on his first attempt, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.

Following his success, he was allotted to the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) rather than the elite Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or Indian Police Service (IPS). Under this allocation, he briefly served as a Section Officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.

Why Did He Leave Civil Services?

Despite securing a prestigious government job that many spend decades attempting to crack, Dr. Divyakirti’s heart lay elsewhere.

After working within the government apparatus for a brief period (roughly a year or less), he realized that the bureaucratic red tape and slow pace of systemic change did not align with his personal calling. Deeply passionate about teaching, literature, and intellectual discourse, he made the bold decision to resign from his civil service post.

In 1999, he pivoted entirely to education and founded Drishti IAS, a coaching and mentoring institution based in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, initially starting with just a handful of students.

From Civil Servant to Nation-Builder Through Education

While Dr. Divyakirti chose not to remain a bureaucrat, his transition into education turned him into an institutional powerhouse. Over the last two decades, Drishti IAS has grown into one of India’s most prominent coaching ecosystems for UPSC and state public service exams, helping thousands of students secure top ranks.

His influence expanded even further into mainstream pop culture and digital media:

  • Digital Mentor: He commands millions of subscribers across his personal and institutional YouTube channels, where he breaks down current affairs, socio-political issues, and literature.
  • Cinematic Appearance: He memorably appeared as himself in the critically acclaimed 2023 biographical drama film 12th Fail, which depicted the hardships of UPSC aspirants.

Summary: Dr. Vikas Divyakirti cleared the UPSC exam and briefly worked as a central government officer in 1996, but he is not an IAS officer. Instead, he chose the path of an educator, entrepreneur, and mentor—shaping the careers of countless future civil servants rather than serving as one himself.
